Since day one the end goal was to drift a corvette specifically a c4. I finally got my opportunity in 2020 to pick up a 1989 vette six speed(rare).
Although the car was low miles for the price car itself was heavily neglected requiring lots of repairs early on in ownership.
Being a corvette the target audience for ownership included older guys that at most took their car to auto cross. The car had a limited aftermarket support. Aero wise most body kits accessible in the states lacked the styling inspired by imports. An exception to this would be the BSM body kit sold in limited number only in Japan.
Suspension wise there was a decent amount of option for coilovers and adjustable control arms aimed at improving ride quality and handling at stock height the lowest most coilovers went where 2 inches which could be achieved by shimming the stock leaf spring.
Obviously 2 inches wasn't enough so I looked to make something custom. Being an engineer student and having access to cad software I was able to moc up a few iterations of universal qa1 coklover assemblies off summit.
After alot of research I was able to piece together a set of coilovers using a QA1 shock with accomadations for a coil, gbody shock mounts and 6inch stance springs.
This got me around 4 inches lower than stock maybe more. Unfortunately I had to disconnect the sway bar because the oem links collided with the spings when fully extended. I also had to widen the shock tower and reverse the rear toe ball joint for clearance purposes.
I was more than satisfied with the results at the time I only having a few events under my belt and some miscellaneous streeting. At this point the car was on a set of bmw bbs style 5s which didn't satisfy my desired fitment.
I ended up miraculously finding a set of 18x9.5 ssrs in 5x120. This probably the best the car has ever looked.
Unfortunately this was satisfactory and I looked to make my own kit to give the car Japanese styling that the bsm kit had. I had mocked up lips and skirts off other cars out of desperation to find something that might work with the body characteristics.
The obeyed lip was a pretty close fit and would be been ran if the universe aloud it....
The downfall started when I took it to a thunder hill event and scrapped the floor off unlike most cars corvettes specifically the 4th generation had floor boards made of fiber glass. This wouldn't be a problem for most people except the floor hung lower than drain rail which was already less than 2 inches from the ground.
Soon after I repaired it I was t boned on the way to work and the story ends there.
Yes I'm ok, yeah it sucked. If anyone has question feel free to ask I left alot of information out of this post.
.
hey i know this guy!
I hate these cars but i'm excited to see where this goes.
